Sea Otters

By: VS Grenier

Sea otters are expert swimmers. Their thick, fluffy fur keeps them warm in cold ocean water.

Baby sea otters sleep wrapped in seaweed. This helps keep them warm and stops them from floating away.

Sea otters float on their backs most of the time. A mother sea otter will put her baby on her tummy to keep it safe. Other sea otters use their tummies for a table when they eat. Sea otters like to eat clams and other sea creatures.

Did you know sea otters can hold their breath underwater?

The sea otter’s ears and nose also close tightly when it dives to keep the water out. Underwater is where otters find the food they like to eat. They also find rocks which they use to open their dinner.

Otters hit the hard shells of clams with rocks from the sea floor. Once the otters break the clamshell open, they enjoy the yummy treat inside.

Next time you go out to eat, ask for some clams on the half shell. Then you can eat like an otter, too.
