How To Write A Story

By: Megan Mellinger, Youth Author

Whether you’re having to write a story for school or wanting to be published, writing a story is a great thing to know how to do. It’s a way to escape to another world where you are the creator of whatever your imagination comes up with.

First I suggest you come up with an idea. You may want to start with figuring out the basics of your main character: gender, age, setting, etc. After that much you can start however you like. It’s easiest to write what you’re comfortable with. For example if you’re a 13-year old girl, it would be very easy to write about the life of a 13-year old girl. Or maybe you have an amazing memory (good or bad) that can be written into a story. Whatever you decide to write, remember, it doesn’t have to be published or to be graded for school. Writing is an expression of freedom. Write what’s on your mind.

If you’re still having trouble finding a topic or an idea for a story, maybe you can completely make something up. Do you think the person who first wrote about aliens really saw them? Of course not. It was just the author’s imagination at work. You can create your own monster or superhero, as well. Basically, the key is to find something you’re interested in. You can always start a story and save it for later. Move onto something new; something totally different, if you want. Writing really doesn’t have rules. Take Dr. Seuss for example, he made up words for his stories. It was genius. You can do that too if you want. Just as long as it makes sense.

Most important: Have fun! It may seem difficult at first to sit down and start writing a story out of thin air. So, get inspiration: read a book, play a sport, even watch TV if that helps you.

For some people it’s easier to create a plan where you put the events of your story in order then go into detail and write about them. Again, there are no rules. Do what’s best for you and enjoy writing.
