Cookie Monster Mystery

By: Amanda Liska, age 8

Mary fell asleep in the car.

“Mary, Mary,” called her dad. “Wake up.”

“Where are we?” asked Mary.

“We’re home,” said her dad.

“Where’s Mommy?”

“Inside. Come on, I will give you a piggy back ride.”

“Yeah!” cried out Mary.

Her dad raced inside. Mary bounced up and down on his back.

Her mom was waiting inside with her P.J’s.

“Come on, it’s time for bed,” said her mom.

“I don’t want to go to bed,” said Mary.

“You can stay downstairs and watch TV for a little bit,” said her dad.

Mary went and sat on the couch. Her mom and dad when upstairs to bed. Mary turned on the TV. Suddenly she heard a noise. GRRRRRROWLLLLL!

It was Mary’s tummy and she was hungry.

Mary walked into the kitchen and grabbed a cookie. Everything was normal until now. The refrigerator started moving.

Mary yelled for her mom and dad.

“It’s just your imagination,” her dad called down from the top of the stairs.

Mary looked back at the refrigerator. It was still moving.

“MOM! DAD!” yelled Mary, running up the stairs.

Her mom and dad told her to go to bed or stop letting her imagination run wild. Mary went back downstairs, wondering why the refrigerator looked like it was moving.

Then she heard it . . . a big ROAR. At first she though it was her tummy again and went to grab another cookie. But then she heard it again.

ROAR!

Mary looked under the refrigerator and screamed.

Underneath was a big cookie monster. Mary ran back upstairs to wake her parents.

“Mommy, there’s a cookie monster under the refrigerator,” said Mary.

“Mary, it’s just your imagination. You need to go to bed,” said her dad.

Mary held back her tears. “No. I still want to watch TV.”

So Mary went back downstairs to face the cookie monster all alone.

She went back into the kitchen and screamed even louder. The cookie monster come out from under the refrigerator.

Wow, he was taller than a house was all Mary could think. Then she poked him with a broom.

The cookie monster wouldn’t leave.

She tried to erase him, but he still wouldn’t leave. Finally, Mary opened the door and kicked him out.

The cookie monster ran away crying.

She felt like the hero of the day.

“Mary, it’s time to get up,” said her dad. “You’re going to be late for school.”

Mary opened her eyes and realized it was only a dream. But at least she would have a cool story to share with her friends at school.
