Breakfast in Bed

By: Diana Murray

We climb aboard apple and cinnamon boats

and float down a river of warm, creamy oats.

The oatmeal has nuts so the river is lumpy.

We paddle with spoons as the ride becomes bumpy.

We rush over rapids then suddenly crash

and fall in the oats with a big goopy splash.

“This isn’t so bad. It smells yummy,” I think.

But my sister exclaims, “We’re beginning to sink!”

“Don’t worry,” I tell her. “I know what to do–

we’ll open our mouths and we’ll eat our way through!”

I gobble and gulp. I keep eating and eating

but off in the distance, a voice keeps repeating,

“Wake up, Jim! Wake up! Time to get out of bed.

Our breakfast is ready. Wake up, sleepy head!

Let’s go,” begs my sister, “or we will be late.”

“No thank you,” I mumble, “I already ate.”
