“Mom!” Jennie shouted. “I can’t find my lucky rabbit’s foot.”
“Check under your bed,” Mom said.
Walking into the kitchen, Jennie said, “I only found Max’s rat toy.” She threw it to the oversized cat.
“You’ll do fine tonight without it,” said Mom. “You won the Spelling Bee Championship last year.”
DING-DONG! Jennie knew it was Peter, her best friend, the greatest detective in second grade. She raced to get the door.
“I need your help,” she said, closing the door behind Peter.
“Help with what?” he replied.
“My lucky rabbit’s foot. It’s gone!”
“Where did you see it last?”
“On my dresser,” replied Jennie
“Let’s start there.”
Peter paced Jennie’s room. Pushing up his glasses, he said, “What do we have here?”
Peter picked up a small red doll shoe.
“That’s my sister’s,” replied Jennie. “She’s playing outside.”
“Let’s go see what she has to say,” said Peter, as they stepped outside the kitchen door.
“Beth, why were you in my room?” demanded Jennie.
“I wasn’t,” replied Beth.
Peter handed Beth the shoe. “We found it under the bed.”
Beth looked at it.
“Beth,” said Peter pushing back his glasses. “You didn’t go in Jennie’s room?”
“No,” replied Beth.
“Let’s get a snack and look at our clues,” said Peter, grabbing Jennie’s hand. They headed back to the kitchen.
Jennie picked up a box of raisins. She poured some into her hand, and a few fell on the floor.
“Oh, yuck!”
Peter looked around. “What’s wrong?”
“Max just ate a raisin.” Jennie picked up Max. “Gross cat.”
“Your cat eats raisins?” Peter’s mouth fell open.
“Yes, he’ll eat about anything. Even green beans.” Jennie put Max outside.
“I’ve been looking in the wrong places,” Peter said, walking outside to watch Max.
The cat climbed up a tree and went into the tree house.
“I’m going up for a look,” Peter said.
Peter climbed the ladder. He could see Max lying on top of something.
“I hope this isn’t a dead mouse,” he said, putting his hand under the cat. He pulled out the rabbit’s foot. Peter climbed down and handed it to Jennie.
“You found it, Peter!” she shouted.
Peter smiled.
