From The Editor:

Summer is here and with it the joy of adventure. One of my best memories of summer as a kid is going on campouts with my family. My dad loved to find remote places off the road to park our truck and campout. I’m not sure if you can still do that nowadays, but it was loads of fun being out in the middle of nowhere. We had no running water, no bathrooms, and we had to make our own fire pit.

I remember on one such outing it was pitch black out as we drove to the burning desert for yet another campout in nowhere land. My dad had the high beams on so we could see where we were going. I remember thinking we could drive without the lights because there was nothing to hit. No bushes, no trees, no cars, and no one else but us on the dirt road. Suddenly the car swerved and my dad hit the brakes. I could feel the fear crawling up my skin to the hairs at the back of my neck.

“Did you see that, Virginia?” my dad asked.

I had no idea what he was talking about. With wide eyes I looked around. I didn’t see anything but the dried-up road and a few tumbleweeds in the headlights.

“No,” I responded. Not wanting to hear what my dad was going to tell me next, I started to sing one of my favorite children’s songs. Unfortunately that didn’t stop my dad from telling me why he swerved the car.

With a look of panic in his eyes he started the car moving again. Turning to me he said, “Keep your eyes open. We almost hit a werewolf!”

My dad loved to play jokes on me, but I wasn’t sure if he was joking this time. Maybe I’ll never know . . .

All the best,

VS Grenier

~The Editors at SFC Magazine

July 08

Our intrepid Nonfiction Editor, Wendy Dickson, had some terrific news to share. Her second grandchild arrived on June 17th! Kashius James arrived weighing 8 lbs, 6 ozs and was 21 inches long. Wendy had the incredible experience of being in the delivery room when her grandson arrived, and she described it as "the most incredible experience of my life!" Wendy is wasting no time in assuring our magazine of future readers – Granddaughter Senna was born only six months ago! Wohooo! Way to go, Wendy!

Author Jacqueline Jules won a SCBWI 2007 Magazine Merit Award for her poem, "Choosing", in the September/October issue of Cicada. Congratulations, Jacqueline – what an honor! WOHOOOOOO! Way to go!

Author/Illustrator Dawn Phillips just shared the following news with us:

Great News! I've just finished illustrating the following children's books to be released in 2008:

The Belly Button Book by Michelle Falli
Matthew Where Are You? by Barbara Dade
D. Rudy Derek and the Tickle Monster, by Barbara Chertoff

Another children's book I've illustrated will be released soon: What If You Give A Child A Letter, By Doris Sweeney.

WOW, Dawn, what awesome news! YOU GO GIRL! You've been a very busy lady and we're tickled pink for you! Congratulations!

Author Donna McDine was just notified that her article, "Five Tips for Researching Children's Stories Market Potential" has been accepted for publication by Cross & Quill – the Christian Writers Newsletter. It will appear in hardcopy print within the next 12 months. This is a paying market, so, as you can imagine, Donna is quite thrilled. We are, too. Congratulations, Donna! You are well on your way to more success! WAHOOO!

Donna also found out recently that she will have another publication in a paying market! This girl is on a definite roll! "Fishing Through A Frozen Lake" was accepted at Boys' Quest Magazine and will be published in 2012. This is an example of where persistence pays off – Donna wrote this article from an assignment at ICL, sent it out, received 4 rejections, then tried Boys' Quest after her critique group gave her sage advice on how to make it a more informational article. She also submitted it with two photos. Unfortunately, as with a lot of the bigger magazines, Donna won't get paid until it's published.

Donna jokes that by the time she gets paid for this article, her eldest daughter will be driving by then – pretty scary thought! Congratulations, Donna – GOOD JOB!

Author Angela K. Adams is a new contributor to SFC Magazine. She was notified by Editor VS Grenier on June 9th via email that her story, "Sera T. Fairy's Test Troubles", was accepted and will appear in the SFC's September 08 issue. Angie got so excited that she was getting this story published with us that the next day, she, well … she decided to have her baby! J/K! But, nonetheless, Luke Edward Adams was born on June 10th and weighed in at 8 lbs, 3 ozs. His three sisters are fighting over who gets to hold him the longest. Congratulations, Angie, on everything! What a great job you are doing as an author AND as a mom! WOHOOOO! YOU GO MOMMY!

Author Annie Laura Smith had the following publications:
Learning Through History March/April 08 Edition: "The Uffizi Gallery"
Lifted Magazine Sept 07 Edition: "Strategies for More Efficient Textbook Reading"

Congratulations, Annie! This is terrific news! I hope your publishing streak continues! COWABUNGA! WOHOOOOOO!

Author C. Lee McKenzie had a short story entitled "The Ghostly Double" published in the Spring '08 edition of Crow Toes Quarterly. She also just published her new website at:http://cleemckenziebooks.com You'll have to check it out – it's awesome, just like Lee! Way to go, Lee! Congratulations!
